The UNESCO Amazon Water Resilient Challenge Ecuador 2025 is officially underway! After receiving over 100 applications, 24 outstanding young leaders were selected to join the program. Their journey started with a vibrant and inspiring welcome meeting, bringing together participants, mentors, and organizers.
The meeting began with an overview of the UNESCO Amazon Biosphere Reserves Project, by Ms. Veronica from UNESCO, explaining how this important initiative strengthens governance, promotes sustainable activities, and protects biodiversity across key Amazon regions, including Ecuador’s Podocarpus-El Cóndor Biosphere Reserve. Participants then took part in a lively ice-breaker session, sharing personal stories and building connections that will fuel teamwork throughout the program.
The session continued with a detailed program overview of the UNESCO Amazon Water Resilient Challenge: Ecuador 2025, by Mr. Gregor from The Water Agency, highlighting the three key phases: Biosphere Academy I (Learning), Biosphere Academy II (Solution Development), Biosphere Academy III (Implementation), and the final Showcase event. Participants also explored the critical water challenges facing the Podocarpus-El CĂłndor Biosphere Reserve, including deforestation, mining pollution, and climate-related water stress. Specific case studies were then introduced – such as Loja Water Smart, Farming for Water, and Water for All – which teams will tackle during their fieldwork and solution development.
Ms. Ana from The Water Agency shared the details of the Training Program and Field Week, covering what participants need to prepare for online learning sessions, expert courses, team assignments, and the exciting field visits in Loja, Ecuador. The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to clarify details, ask questions, and get ready for the exciting challenge ahead.
